8 october > 31 december 1999Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat, art nouveau ceramist
In the third quarter of the last century, France was the centre for the developement of art nouveau ceramics. A new generation of traditional artist had almost entirely turned away from fine porcelain. Their choice of a more "democratic" material was influenced by the socialy official Arts and Crafts Movement. A significant element was the wide range of technical possibilities tried out in Oriental ceramics. This new knowledge made it possible to achieve new artistic results. Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat (1844-1910) devloped his "rouge Dalpayrat" on base of copper. He decorated simple forms with an unprecedented wealth of colors. His particular penchent was for flambed and marbled glass. Dalpayrat's art nouveau oeuvre will be represented by about 150 objects divided according to several themes.
